May Long Weekend Countdown: 3 Steps to a Party-Ready Backyard

As the May long weekend approaches, the countdown to patio season in Eastern Ontario is officially on. Whether you’re in Kemptville, Brockville, or the heart of Ottawa, we all know that first warm weekend is the kickoff for backyard BBQs and late-night stargazing.

But before you break out the burgers, your yard needs more than just a quick mow. Owning a property comes with the responsibility of "adulting" maintenance... but it doesn't have to end there; actually enjoy your space and be excited to welcome guests with a few well-placed enhancements.

Step 1: Adulting Maintenance Checks

Before the fun begins, look at the “bones” of your yard. Safety and longevity are the names of the game here.

  • The Water Bead Test: Is your deck actually protected? Pour a small amount of water onto your deck boards. If it beads up, your seal is still holding. If the water soaks in and darkens the wood, your sealer has failed, leaving your deck vulnerable to water damage, rot, mould, and UV damage.

  • Ledger Board Inspection: This is the most critical safety check. The ledger board is where your deck attaches to your house. Check for any gaps between the house and the deck, or signs of rusted flashing. If this connection isn't rock-solid, it’s a major safety hazard for large gatherings.

  • The Cup & Crack Check: Look for boards that are starting to "cup" (curl upward at the edges) or have developed deep cracks. These trap water and debris, which accelerates rot. Identifying these early means you can often replace or repair individual boards rather than having to rebuild all or a portion of the deck.

  • The Post-to-Pillar Check: Check where your deck or fence posts meet the ground or concrete piers. If you see soft wood or persistent dampness at the base, it’s a sign that moisture is wicking up. Addressing this now prevents a structural collapse later.

Step 2: Spring Cleaning

A little spiffing up goes a long way in extending the life of your investments.

  • Power Wash Everything: A professional power wash removes the grey oxidation and grime that builds up over winter, turning back the clock and bringing out the beauty beneath the weathered surface. Don't just stop at the deck - think about your fence, old play structure, shed, and even your siding. It’s the easiest way to make an old outdoor anything instantly look five years younger.

  • Restaining & Protecting: If you failed the water test, a fresh coat of stain is non-negotiable. Restaining your deck, fence, and that eyesore of a playground will make them look brand new and aesthetically cohesive. If your home has wood siding, a fresh stain there not only boosts curb appeal but prevents the wood from warping and cracking under the intense summer sun. Restaining doesn't have to be boring - this is an opportunity to have fun with colour! Change the mood and feel of your outdoor space - and make everything match!

  • Ambiance: Ambiance and safety can go hand in hand. Swapping out standard fence or deck post caps for solar-powered LED caps provides a soft glow for evening drinks... and of course safe navigation in the dark.

Step 3: Next Level Hosting

Now for the fun part - actually enjoying your backyard! A few strategic and well-placed enhancements can elevate the feel of your outdoor space, making it livable and an extension of your home.

  • Custom Carpentry & Storage: Tired of dragging cushions inside every time it rains? Consider custom-built benches stained to match your deck. They offer a high-end, built-in look with hidden storage for cushions, garden toys, or pool supplies.

  • Fun Seating for Adults (and kids): Create a space to soak up the sun and read, or a fun social space to chill out. Upgrade your seating with hanging, stylish cushioned egg chairs or a swinging bench for a touch of whimsy.

  • The Outdoor Kitchen: Why stop at a standalone BBQ? Start the foundation of an outdoor kitchen with custom cabinetry, a stone-topped grilling station or even a pizza oven! Get creative with how you cook and your setup to take your outdoor hosting to the next level.
